India sets a highly ambitious target of 1 million hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2020

A hydrogen road map has been laid out for India’s transportation future. The figures are just astonishing with over Rs 250 billion ($6 billion USD) being projected to complete the project including Rs 10 billion ($259 million USD) being allocated to R&D alone.

The goal is to by 2020 be able to supply these 1 million new vehicles with hydrogen power. The majority of these vehicles would be simple two or three wheeled vehicles which are most common in India. The National Hydrogen Energy Road Map as it is being called will also seek to create 1,000 MW in hydrogen based power generation.

Both public as well as private entities will be involved in the plan. Hydrogen holds great promise for India as it has it will be able to provide power for locomotion as well as for stationary and remote power. Something which India desperately needs as it seeks to find alternatives for diesel generators which as of late have gained an ever increasing popularity in remote communities. While one million vehicles may seem a lot , considering that India’s population of well over a billion continues to grow it will certainly only be a start on the long term road to providing India for it’s transportation needs.
