The company which is government controlled is looking for potential projects at the 50 MW range. The site will most likely be in Himalayan states where the greatest potential for geothermal power is. NTPC has traditionally been a producer of coal thermal power, but now with ever increasing demands for power are being faced in India will also examine hydro, wind, and nuclear forms of power. The project represents a big leap for the company as at current geothermal power plants require considerable investments, a stark contrast to the low amounts of capital per MW found in coal projects.
The Indian market which has been spearheaded by NTPC in the area of thermal power generation in the past has seen big shifts in the past years with such legislation as the Electricity Act 2003. The government has had to consider the needs of consumers as well as the need for sustainable energy portfolio both economically and environmentally. At current there are about 120 GW s being generated in India over the coming ten years that figure will have to more then double to keep pace with demand. NTPC is responsible for 20% of current capacity alone.
