Meridian Energy looks to secure future energy needs of South Island in New Zealand with it’s Waitaki Dam Project

The project which would provide an additional between 1100 and 1400 Gigawatt hours per year and could be ready at the earliest in 2016 is continuing to face opposition. The Waitaki Dam Project would add to the Waitaki power station which is currently generating 500 Gigawatt hours per year. The project involves a 34 km tunnel which would see the water drop 128 meters before feeding back into the river. Thus far there has been a vast consent process underway with the community to ensure that before the estimate $900 million are spent on the project the water source is secured for the project with minimal ecological and environmental impact.

The project would feed back into the national grid of New Zealand which connects both islands. In past years due to economic growth on the South Island energy demand has increased, coupled with dry spells have left the island short on power. To ensure the economic well being of the Island for the future this renewable project is being looked at by Meridian, which already operates wind farms as well.
