The demonstrator tidal turbine was deployed between June 23rd and June 26th, taking advantage of favourable weather conditions and currents. The immersion was carried out in the Fromveur Strait, near South Ushant, Brittany, by Combi Lift using its 133 metre long vessel “Palembang”, equipped with two 450 ton cranes. A 200 metre cable jumper is also in place behind the turbine.
Installation operations of this demonstrator, which will soon be the first grid-connected tidal turbine in France, took place between June 23rd and 26th thanks to favourable weather and currents conditions. The immersion has been carried out by Combi Lift, using its 133 meter long vessel "Palembang", which is equipped with two 450 tons cranes, allowing the lifting of the 400 tons turbine. The tidal turbine has been installed in the Fromveur Strait at its planned installation point, perfectly horizontal and along its wanted orientation, facing the strong currents. The 200 meters cable jumper that is behind the turbine has then been laid on the seabed.
The 3 metre wide prototype turbine was tested for a full year in Bénodet, Brittany, and Sabella is now developing a new industrial series. The Sabella D10 project was selected by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) for public funding under the 3.9 million euros “investissements d’avenir” initiative, having been developed by a team of engineers in Brittany during 2013. The total value of the project is estimated to be between 13 million and 14 million Euros.
The turbine will be grid connected in the next few days.
