The Australian Clean Technologies Ideas Competition, launched Friday morning by Innovation Minister Kim Carr, aims to identify the best ways of addressing the challenges of climate change and sustainability.
According to the ministry, the clean technologies industry is worth $22 billion and employs over 25,000 people nationally. The Government’s goal is to ensure a sustainable and cohesive sector that helps Australia meet the growing needs of a green economy.
Under the rules of the competition, ideas can be for technologies, services and policies that address renewable energy and energy storage needs, new ways of looking at energy efficiency, pollution, waste treatment, building materials, transportations systems, and public utilities.
Competition entrants will compete for a range business services tailored to suit the diversity of needs reflected in the new ideas – be it access to venture capitalists, patent support, legal advice, research support or corporate assurance.
The winner of the Australian competition will represent Australia at the international Cleantech Open Global Ideas Competition which is being held in the US this fall.
There, the winner will compete for $100,000 in services to launch their ideas and gain access to investors, with a series of introductions set up for them.
