In an effort to raise awareness of the Scottish renewable industry, photographer, Toby Smith, has decided to spend two months on-location documenting the wealth of renewable resources Scotland has to offer. The project is perfectly timed as the Scottish renewables industry is beginning to ramp up, driven by the growth of its offshore wind and marine energy sectors.
According to the photographer, he will use traditional landscape aesthetic combined with ambitious lighting, “to celebrate the unified relationship between the striking Scottish landscape and the growing renewable industry”.
Stimulating discussion and debate
The project is now underway and will be documented and exposed at each stage of its development as Smith updates his blog with ‘recce’ shots. The finished result will be 12 incredible large-scale images presenting a relationship that Smith hopes will stimulate discussion and debate, opening a new dialogue for the future of renewable technology.
“The project aims to be finished by mid/end of April and the final set will eventually be posted on the blog as a gallery. He will also tour with the exhibition to a few energy trade fairs and a selection of galleries,” says Alexa Montgomery, Smith’s press officer.
The project is supported by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), whose core purpose is to provide energy in a reliable and sustainable way, promoting the growth of renewable energy. Smith and SSE have worked closely together to choose the sites appropriate for the project. This selection has taken into careful consideration a number of varying factors including the cultural and historical significance of each of the sites.
Toby Smith is a contemporary and reportage photographer specialising in landscape, architecture and unique lighting conditions. Using large-format traditional negative enables him to capture landscape in extremely low-light with exposures lasting many hours to produce incredibly detailed prints. This gives a uniquely captivating other-worldly presence to his work.
While some of Smith’s images are already available on his blog, Montgomery stresses that: “the difference between the final images and the current ones on the blog is that the final ones are shot on film which gives them a much higher quality and immense sense of detail”.
Considering the beauty captured by Smith in the images already posted, Renewable Energy Magazine will be waiting with baited breath for the final images to be revealed and will be sure to tell our readers about it.
