The fundamental topic under discussion is how to ensure the European Union’s transition to a clean energy economy is fair, well-funded and effective? Five opinions will focus on the matter. The EU’s leading consultative body for civil society will release the final opinions on Wednesday 26 April, following a plenary debate and vote among its 350 members drawn from employers, workers and other interest groups.
At 10:30 a.m. on Thursday 27 April members will question Commission Vice President and Commissioner for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič on their concerns, ahead of negotiations in the European Parliament and Council.
Likely topics of debate over the two days include:
Potential implementation and ambition gaps among member states
How to transition the most coal-dependent regions
How viable is the Commission’s proposed governance scheme on national energy/climate plans
Greater energy decision-making by local and regional governments
Mitigating job losses in phased-out industries
The need to accelerate construction of energy efficient buildings
Ensuring a level playing field for renewable energies against other fuel sources
‘Putting energy efficiency first’ while tackling energy poverty
Seeing that cost savings are passed on to consumers
