Dubai Chamber of Commerce recognized for providing green leadership for the Arab world

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has received Saudi Arabia’s Environmental Management Award for its leadership in the realm of green building and promoting other sustainable policies in the Arab world.

The award, bestowed during a ceremony in Alexandria, Egypt, is given in cooperation with the Arab Administrative Development Organization (ARADO), an affiliate of the League of Arab States.

“This regional recognition is a great honour for Dubai Chamber,” said Abdul Rahman Saif Al Ghurair, the organization’s chairman. “It also affirms our determination and commitment to supporting Dubai's green building aspirations and for leading such green initiatives in the region.

“We sincerely hope that our pioneering achievement will encourage other buildings to follow Dubai Chamber's lead so that not only the UAE but the whole region can significantly enhance its environmental performance which is so very important for the success of modern businesses,” he said.

The award aims to promote the broad definition of Environment Management in the Arab world and encourages the Arab countries to look further into successful regional and international sustainable development experiences.

It is considered an important cornerstone in the promotion of environmental awareness and an incentive for all institutions and individuals to secure the future of coming generations in the Arab region.

The Chamber, founded in 1965, has earlier achieved the LEED certification for being the first existing building in the Arab world for its efforts in reducing water and energy consumption by installing sensors for water and lighting systems, low-intensity energy bulbs, temperature sensors to reduce cooling loads by maintaining comfortable temperature and optimising lift weight loads to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent.

According to Al Ghurair, the award further reiterates the Chamber's resolve “to promote the concept of sustainability among the larger business community and to show how businesses can help the environment, save natural resources, enhance their reputation, improve the working conditions in their organizations and contribute to the overall economic development of their respective countries”.
