On Thursday, Elon Musk, the entrepreneur and inventor behind Tesla Motors, SpaceX and SolarCity, announced much anticipated plans to create solar-powered batteries for homes and businesses. In a release the company said the wall-mounted technology would change the ""entire energy infrastructure of the world." "The issue with existing batteries is that they suck ... they’re really horrible,” Musk said at an event held at the Tesla Motors design studio in Hawthorne, California Thursday evening. He predicted that his technology is the "solution," the "missing link" in the transition to a renewables-powered world. The company's wall-mounted "Powerwall" is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can store up to 10kWh of solar and wind energy. It is coupled with a , liquid thermal control system and software that receives dispatch commands from a solar inverter, and can provide power even in the event of a black out, Musk said.
