Grupo Energético del Caribe (GECaribe) is an integrating company that designs, develops, builds and operates clean energy production plants in Mexico. Before the reform on the energy sector took place, GEC began its activity in Mexico developing photovoltaic plants.
The Law of the Electricity Industry and the opportunities offered to the energy producing entities led to the decision to offer the Mexican industrial sector the development of clean energy projects, adapted to the thermal needs of the different industries and exporting to third parties the surpluses of electricity produced as well as the Clean Energy Certificates.
GEC has a wide presence in the Republic of Mexico, as well as in various industrial sectors: textile, food, dairy, paper, liquor ... GECaribe develops projects in different financing formats (capital loans, project finance ...) and different Investment structures, from projects exclusively owned by the industrial to projects 100% owned by third-party investors.
“The most frequent structure is a partnership between the industrial and a third party investor, both sharing the capital of the SPV who owns the cogeneration plant. This SPV signs a long-term PPA contract with the industry that receives the energy at a lower price than the alternatives in the market, obtaining both investors of the SPV the profits produced by the SPV in the proportion corresponding to their participation in the society”, explains Fernando Pérez Auba, CFO of GEcaribe.
