HyperSolar has announced a plan to build new renewable hydrogen generators for commercial use. The company is the developer of a breakthrough technology which uses sunlight and water to produce hydrogen and its first commercial product, the H2Generator, is expected to sell at a lower price than other renewable hydrogen systems that rely on expensive and energy intensive electrolyzers to split water.
“We believe that we can offer a cost competitive renewable hydrogen alternative for those who need power 24/7,” said Tim Young, CEO of HyperSolar. “We believe that our intensive R&D efforts will finally pay off in the form of a go to market commercial product. One key discovery was an efficient and low cost polymer protective coating that will allow us to protect solar devices against photocorrosion. Using this coating to treat traditional silicon solar cells, we are able to eliminate the expensive electrolyzer by integrating the electrolysis function directly into a solar cell immersed in water.”
Mr Young added that the company’s technical team have been given the ‘green light’ to complete the product design in order to build the first demonstration system. The company will then be able to move towards the manufacturing phase.
The H2Generator will be a linearly scalable and self-contained renewable hydrogen production system which could be installed almost anywhere in order to supply hydrogen fuel for local use. This will in turn help to solve one of the greatest challenges facing the industry – how to transport hydrogen fuel to point of use in large quantities. Each stage of the generator will be able to be scaled independently according to demand and length of storage required for specific applications, thus a small system could be used to produce continuous renewable electricity for a small house while a larger system can be used to power a community.
