ICV proposes to invest the nuclear revenues into renewables

Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds (ICV) has proposed that life length of nuclear plants in Spain is set to 30 years, subject to investing during the last 5 years 70% of the revenues, currently being used to pay the facilities, in promoting renewable energies. ICV's spokesman in the Congress, Mr Joan Herrera, suggested this proposal in the nuclear power round table (in which all the stakeholders involved regularly take part), aiming to push the government towards the creation of a nuclear plant close-down calendar, thus meeting the electoral commitment made by the PSOE, Spain's Socialist Party, according to Efe.

During a meeting with journalists, Mr Herrera added that it is necessary to set the year 2018 as deadline for closing down the eight nuclear plants that are still working in the country, as long as it is guaranteed that the dismantling of the facilities will not affect electricity supply levels for users.

For it, according to Herrera, it is necessary to define an efficient energy strategy as soon as possible, one that is based in renewable energy and that allows to get over the current energy model, too dependent on energy resource imports, namely oil, gas and uranium.

Mr Herrera explained that, in theory, nuclear plants have to be paid off in 25 years, a period of time in which 70% of revenues obtained (1,498 million euros in 2004) are used to finance the facility.

What ICV suggests is to invest these revenues in promoting renewables during the last 5 years of operation of the plants, so that supply in the post-nuclear phase is guaranteed.

In concrete, the green group suggests to use 50% of these revenues in promoting clean energy, 15% in making towns near nuclear plants more socially and economically dynamic, 15% to the plant management and 20% to the maintenance and safety of these facilities.

As concerns the government's proposal of creating a temporary centralized deposit (ATC), or also called nuclear cemetery, in Vandellós or Zorita, Mr Joan Herrera said that his organization "would be willing to accept such a technical solution, however only as long as there is a nuclear plant close-down calendar".
