In a joint statement released through Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s office, Nan and visiting Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych announced they’ve agreed to start negotiations this year for a bilateral treaty to promote and protect investments.
Half a world away Banri Kaieda, Japan’s trade minister, told attendees at an investment seminar in Ukraine that “an investment treaty would further promote cooperation utilizing Japan’s useful technology, mainly in energy and the environment”
“We hope for an early conclusion of negotiations toward a new stage for the bilateral economic relations,” Kaieda said.
For his part, Yanukovych said, “I hope our meeting will give new impetus and will open a new path of global relations between our countries.
According to a report by Bloomberg News, the Ukraine is especially interested in Japanese technologies for solar and wind power, heat insulation and biomass.
