The figures show that wind power alone produced enough electricity in October to meet the energy needs of every home in Scotland. Wind turbines generated around 982,842 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity and analysis by WWF Scotland suggests this amount is enough to power more than 3 million homes, meeting the equivalent of 126 percent of Scotland’s electricity needs.
The analysis follows figures showing that Scotland is on track for a record year of renewable energy generation in 2014. Renewable electricity generation increased by 30 percent in the first half of 2014, compared to the previous year.
“These are very welcome figures – demonstrating the strength of our renewables industry and showing that the Scottish Government’s commitment to and investment in renewables are paying dividends” said SNP MSP Rob Gibson. “With recent reports of the UK’s tightening energy gap it is clearer than ever that Scotland’s renewable electricity generation will play a key part in keeping the lights on across the UK – and to keeping energy bills down. With Scottish Government support our renewables industry is going from strength to strength – bringing jobs and investment to Scotland, reducing carbon emissions and performing a key role in meeting our energy needs. But there is even more that can be done.”
Mr Gibson added that Scotland needs Westminster to transfer full powers relating to energy policy ensuring that the country’s energy industry enjoys continued support.
