NREL, a global leader in solar photovoltaic research, also takes a leading role in educating the public about renewable energy. Solar Day aims to heighten the public's awareness of photovoltaic systems, which convert sunlight to electricity. Denver Solar Day runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 8 at the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th Street in Denver.
NREL's Brent Nelson will present "PV Myths" to help kick off the day. There also will be presentations from the Colorado Renewable Energy Society, the NASA, Denver Clean Cities, and Independent Power Systems, among others. The Ford Motor Company will be exhibiting solar vehicles and solar charging stations.
NREL also organized a high school student competition associated with the event, with NREL's Keith Emery as chairman, and Daniel Friedman as vice-chairman. Among the solar power presentations from students are demonstrations of a thermoelectric cooler from Englewood High School, a portable water purifying device from St. Mary's Academy, and an electric car charging station from Lakewood High School.
Four NREL scientists will host a hands-on booth, inviting students and conference-goers to pedal bikes to learn how much kinetic power is needed to power a generator set to approximate the energy output of an average solar panel.
Denver Solar Day coincides with the opening day of the 40th IEEE Photovoltaics Specialists Conference (PVSC), also at the Colorado Convention Center.
"Denver Solar Day is a great opportunity for students and the public to learn how cutting-edge research in renewable energy and energy efficiency is leading to a more sustainable energy future," Dana Christensen, NREL's Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology, said. "At NREL we go beyond research and technology transfer. We take our education mission seriously."
NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for the Energy Department by The Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
