Portugal plans to increase the amount of renewable energy it uses by one-third over 10 years

Portugal plans to increase the amount of energy it receives from renewable sources such as solar and wind by one-third over the next 10 years, according to a report released Friday.

The plan, published in Diario da Republica, the government’s register, would increase the percentage of energy from renewable sources from 22.6 percent this year to 31 percent by 2020.

At the same time, the nation’s transportation sector would increase the proportion of energy it uses from renewable sources to 10 percent by 2020.

According to the announcement in Diario da Republica, the scheme would make Portugal one of the “five leading countries in Europe in the field of renewable energy.”

At the same time, officials said, the plan will help the nation reduce its dependence on fossil fuel imports while creating as many as 35,000 new green jobs.

Last year, nearly 45 percent of the electricity fed into Portugal’s national grid came from renewable sources, up from just 17 percent five years ago.
