REE will implement a specific control system for renewable energies next summer

Red Eléctrica de España (REE), Spain's electricity system "operator", will implement a special regime (renewable energy and cogeneration) facilities control system next summer. The measure is aimed especially at windparks, according to EFE. REE's President, Mr Luis Atienza, told EFE that this "specialized unit", called Centro de Control para el Régimen Especial - CECRE (Special Regime Control Centre), will improve the integration of wind power and electricity grids management capabilities.

Mr Atienza explained that the development of wind power must see the use of technologies improving voltage stability, extending grid connections with France and making wind power "more manageable". Currently, most wind turbines are automatically disconnected when voltage stability issues are detected, namely small interruptions that last barely some tenths of second.

Mr Atienza also highlighted the importance of extending the connections with France to reduce the impact of disconnections or voltage stability issues. He recalled that wind power in use can pass from 7,000 MW to 1,000 MW in only one day, which causes unstability in the system. Mr Atienza called, also, for using remote control systems in all windparks, and also that they are integrated in offices linked to REE.
