UK Prime Minister Theresa May has this morning announced a general election scheduled for June this year. This in turn has prompted the UK renewable energy industry to call for more support for renewable energy in the country.
“Political parties should support a vibrant renewable energy sector if they want to be successful in Government” said RenewableUK Executive Director Emma Pinchbeck. “This is a sector which offers regional economic growth, and an affordable, sustainable, domestic energy supply. And we know that renewable energy is massively popular with voters - three-quarters of the public support renewables.
Ms Pinchbeck added that there is a massive opportunity for an incoming Government to reap the benefits of the renewable energy transition. Yesterday (17th April), RenewableUK issued a response to the Government’s Industrial Strategy which highlights how the UK can benefit from the global renewable energy transition now underway, worth hundreds of billions of dollars every year.
The trade association said that the companies it represents are the innovators and risk takers Britain needs and that they are bringing new business models and technologies to market, while also driving down costs for UK consumers. Cheap onshore wind, construction of the largest offshore wind farms in the world and taking advantage of the country’s world-leading marine renewables resources will increase the UK energy sector’s vibrancy and value while giving the country a leading position in the international energy market. RenewableUK said that this is something that should be recognised by all political parties in the General Election campaign.
