RENEX 2010 renewables fair celebrates second season in Istanbul

The RENEX renewables fair will be in its second season this year following its successful premiere in November 2009. From 9 to 12 December 2010, Deutsche Messe will be partnering with its Turkish subsidiary Hannover Fairs Turkey and its joint venture company Hannover-Messe Sodex to stage RENEX 2010 at the Istanbul Expo Center.

Several hundred exhibitors are expected to mount displays on a gross exhibition area of 12,000 square metres. The participating companies will include wind and solar power plant manufacturers and suppliers of hydropower station technology. Other main display categories include geothermal energy, bioenergy and innovative energy efficiency technologies and solutions. For the first time, energy efficiency and associated applications will also be featured in a special display run in cooperation with Turkey’s Association of Thermal Insulation, Waterproofing, Sound Insulation and Fireproofing Material Producers, Suppliers and Applicators (IZODER).

“In light of the positive response to last year’s show we have decided to expand RENEX 2010 by one exhibition hall. Turkey offers rich potential for tapping renewables, especially wind and solar energy,” said Wolfgang Lenarz, Deutsche Messe’s Senior Vice-President in charge of overseas trade fairs.

The amendments to Turkey’s renewables legislation, which were drafted at the start of 2010, are expected to be passed into law before the end of the year. The higher feed-in tariffs provided for in the amended law would benefit solar power, biomass and geothermal installations in particular. Wind-generated electricity in Turkey is already economically viable at the current standard price of 5.5 euro cents per kWh.

Strong international participation

RENEX 2010 will see a high level of participation from foreign exhibitors. Germany alone is expected to field four group pavilions, with the federal states of Bremen/Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, Berlin/Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia all planning joint exhibits for their local energy-sector manufacturers. The Austrian and Italian market leaders have also registered for the fair.

NRW International, EnergieAgentur.NRW, and the Cologne Chamber of Commerce will jointly stage the German-Turkish Energy Symposium, which will run on 10 December alongside RENEX. This year’s Symposium will focus on wind and geothermal energy.

Turkey’s renewables market continues to grow

One fifth of Turkey’s energy requirement is currently generated from renewables, predominantly hydropower. Wind energy is regarded as offering the greatest growth potential. The Turkish government plans to increase the country’s current renewables capacity of 800 MW to 10,000 MW by 2014. Following a slight drop in energy consumption in 2009, Turkey anticipates an increase of four percent for this year, which further highlights the urgent need to increase the country’s generation capacity and its energy efficiency.
