Production of the tiles will be a joint effort with SolarCity, though details on how the companies will work together -- a proposed merger is still pending -- have not been announced.
The hoped-for merger was announced in June. Shareholders are scheduled to vote on it later this month.
In the meantime, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the move into the home is a natural for the company as many of those who have purchased his vehicles already use some form of renewable energy in their homes or businesses.
The glass tiles will each be fitted with photovoltaic cells that Tesla says will be integrated with its Powerwall energy storage units.
"The whole purpose of Tesla is to accelerate the advent of sustainable energy," Musk said at an event last week.
On Tuesday, Tesla Motors released documents that said the merger with SolarCity could add $1 billion in revenue to the combined company by next year. Musk is chairman of both companies. The proposed all-stock deal has been valued at $2.45 billion.
But the merger is not without its critics. Industry analysts say neither company has proven its profitability and both make products for whom the market is still uncertain.
