The 100 MW will be part of a total 1,200 MW of generating capacity processed through the same prequalification procedure. The deadline for filing the form is no later than 12.00 local time on 26 July. Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry and Technology plans to roll out all of the 1,200 MW of proposed renewables capacity by 2016/2017. All installations must comply with European environmental standards.
According to sources, wind power could be the most popular technology due to its cost competitiveness and experience already acquired in this North African country. Moreover, given the large size of some wind companies that often form part of large energy groups, they could install the announced 100 MW of renewable energy, as well as make use of synergies encompassed in a bigger bid covering the remaining 1,100 MW of power.
The ministry is conducting this 1,200 MW project through an agreement with Italy, to which Tunisia will sell the electricity generated by 800 MW of new capacity by way of a new 1,000 MW interconnection to be built between the two countries. The energy produced by the remaining 400 MW of capacity will be consumed by Tunisia’s domestic market.
