U.S. Navy to Require Vendors to report Climate Impacts

The U.S. Navy announced it will henceforth require major contractors to report their greenhouse gas emissions and outline steps to reduce them.
U.S. Navy to Require Vendors to report Climate Impacts

Speaking at a Silicon Valley tech conference earlier this week, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said the service is in a unique position in regard to the impacts of climate change, particular rising oceans levels caused by Arctic ice melt.

The new policy is similar to one adopted by the U.S. General Service Administration last year. While it establishes reporting requirements, it does not mean that vendors will be automatically dropped if they emit a high level of carbon dioxide.

The U.S. Navy is one of the biggest users of fossil fuels in the world. It uses about one-third of the fossil fuel employed by the U.S. military.
