United States to pull out of Paris climate accord

The White House said Wednesday that President Donald Trump will withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord, but he will also dangle a carrot or two before angered allies -- suggesting if they renegotiate the deal to make it more palatable to American businesses, he might opt back in.

Trump himself tweeted Wednesday, "I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

The administration's intention to walk away from the deal is being reported in the US media in stories attributed to anonymous White House staffers.

Former President Barack Obama had embraced the 2015 Paris climate accord, saying its goals and requirements comported nicely with his desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the US and expand the use of renewable energy.

Nearly 200 other nations also voluntarily agreed under the deal to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Trump's decision to withdraw from the accord means the US and Russia will be the only two of the world's industrial economies not to step up to the plate when it comes to trying to limit the man-made influences on climate change.

Trump, who once called climate change a hoax, had promised American voters he would walk away from the deal. However since taking office, he'd been coy about his intentions.

That's why last week, when Trump visited Europe and the Middle East, a number of leaders hoped to convince him to stay engaged in the accord.

Trump reportedly met with Scott Pruitt, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, on Tuesday.

Pruitt has also repeatedly questioned the consensus of climate scientists that the Earth is warming and that man-made climate emissions are to blame.

Since being confirmed by the US Senate, Pruitt has begun rolling back federal regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions.

The US is the world's second largest emitter of carbon, following only China.

China, however, has reaffirmed its commitment to meeting its targets under the Paris accord, recently canceling construction of about 100 coal-fired power plants.

It is also investing billions in massive wind and solar projects.
