$1,000 to install solar energy on the roof?

From now on, Australia will not only have nice white beaches and a lot of sun… John Edwards, the country’s Prime Minister, has announced that they will start using it to produce energy. The Government will spend over $600 m to promote solar energy in households and schools.

Under the new scheme, homes will be offered $1000 rebates to install solar thermal systems to heat water. The opportunity is available only to existing homes and families will incomes below $100,000, though.

Likewise, the government has announced schools will receive green vouchers under the new proposal. Each voucher will be worth $50,000 and must go to install solar thermal equipment or rainwater tanks.

This is undoubtedly a good move by the Australian government, which has also taken some steps towards introducing carbon trading and promoting nuclear power lately. Indeed, the Australian cabinet is not the only one moving in this direction.
