Billed as "Austin Solar Day", the event is being held at the Austin Convention Center in conjunction with the 38th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference (PVSC).
"Texas is home to one of the sunniest climates in the U.S. and is ripe with opportunities for home and business owners to alleviate electricity costs through renewable energy. Although interest in 'going solar' is growing in the Austin area, many residents are unsure of where to begin the process," said B.J. Stanbery, Conference General Chair for the 38th IEEE PVSC. "Austin Solar Day offers an unparalleled opportunity for our community to learn about solar energy from the people who know it best. We're excited to share our expertise with our neighbors and to showcase the solar innovations of Austin's young PV scientists."
The conference is considered the solar industry's longest-running US gathering of PV scientists and engineers from around the world.
The one-day Austin Solar Day, will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and will feature beginner-level educational sessions on the benefits of solar energy, where attendees can engage with industry experts from across the country.
Session leaders include representatives from Austin Energy, the Texas Solar Energy Society and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
The event will also feature exhibits from solar businesses and local system installers. Attendees will be encouraged to meet with company representatives, who can provide information on the logistics of integrating a solar PV system to generate clean electricity for homes and businesses.
Additionally, Austin Solar Day will showcase the High School Photovoltaic Design Competition, a venue for local high school students to display their self-designed solar PV projects. Participating high schools include: Bowie High School Copperas Cove High School Keystone School Pflugerville High School Renaissance Academy Stony Point High School Taylor High School William B. Travis High School.
The goal of the organizing committee is to award the winning high school a custom solar electric system for its campus, financed through proceeds from the Solar Energy for Bright Minds charity golf classic, which will be held 4 June at the Lost Creek Country Club in Austin.
