CPV developer Circadian Solar secures further £2 million in funding

Circadian Solar, formally known as AdvanceSis, has announced approval of a £2 million (€2.3 million) investment by offshore investment company Seven Spires Investments Ltd (SSIL) to continue developing its concentrated photovoltaic technology. This is the release of the second tranche of an investment of £8 million (€9.2 million) planned to be rolled out over three years by SSIL.

Robin Godfrey, CEO of Circadian Solar commented: “This is an exciting time for Circadian Solar. Recent months have seen rapid development of our CPV technology and we will soon be in a position to deploy our solar power units on a wider scale.”

The funding will help the UK-based technology company to move forward with a number of projects over the coming months. This month, it will be sending a one kilowatt unit to one of its Mediterranean test sites for extensive field testing, which will be followed by a commercial-size system later in the year. Circadian Solar is also currently exploring a number of applications for its CPV systems, both on- and off-grid, such as remote telecoms power supply, decentralised power in rural areas and refrigeration.

“Circadian Solar is well on target to become a major player in the supply of CPV energy systems. They have achieved all technical and commercial milestones to date and we are pleased to release the next stage of funding for this exciting venture,” commented Edward McCabe of SSIL. “This funding will permit Circadian Solar to complete its commercial-scale demonstration and test system. It will also allow an important investment into a joint venture aimed at significantly reducing the cost of high-performance solar cell devices over the next few years, as part of our drive to lower the costs of CPV systems to grid parity. We are delighted with the continuing support of SSIL,” said Dr Godfrey.

Commenting on the impact of renewables on the ailing UK economy, Godfrey continued: “There’s a lot of exciting news for Circadian Solar at the moment, that all comes in the context of a real groundswell in the solar industry as renewables come to play a larger role in the world’s energy mix. But the benefits aren’t just applicable to the countries where these units will be established; with UK businesses like Circadian Solar forging ahead with CPV technology, the associated advantages of manufacturing and job opportunities will be felt much closer to home.”
