The two lots assigned to EGP, the maximum permitted by the terms of the tender, are also the largest: one is located at Teulada, in the province of Cagliari; the other is at Serre Persano, in the province of Salerno.
The land covers a total of about 190 hectares with high solar radiation levels.
"This is a very important award for us”, said Francesco Starace, CEO of Enel Green Power, “one that testifies to our company's ability to develop cutting-edge technological projects at a competitive price.
“The new facilities will add to the 67 MW installed by Enel Green Power in Italy and around the world in 2010 and 2011, during which period we also launched the world's first hybrid project, in Nevada, which combines a photovoltaic facility with a medium enthalpy binary-cycle geothermal plant," Starace said.
The new photovoltaic plants, which will use the panels produced by the new Catania factory of 3Sun – a joint venture between EGP, Sharp and STMicroelectronics -- will be able to generate up to 80 million kWh a year, equivalent to the annual consumption of nearly 30,000 households, as well as avoiding the emission of some 58,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.
