The secondary school is being developed by Aldar Academies, and represents the first private school in the UAE to utilize a grid connected solar photovoltaic power system.
The solar power system will be mounted on the roof of the school’s sports facility, producing 326 MWhs of clean energy per year, achieving an annual carbon emission reduction of 275 tons.
Electricity produced from the system will be fed directly to the school’s power distribution network and the Abu Dhabi municipal grid.
“We are delighted to be working with Aldar on this landmark project,” said Enviromena CEO Sami Khoreibi. “School rooftops are an ideal platform for distributed solar power production. Al Bateen School sets the example for the development of future schools, particularly given Abu Dhabi’s investment into state-of-the-art school campuses alongside the established 7% renewable energy target.”
Mohammed Al Mubarak, Aldar’s Deputy CEO and Chief Commercial Officer, added: “Al Bateen, a state of the art secondary school in the heart of Abu Dhabi, has been designed to meet the academic, creative and sporting needs of its pupils when it opens in September 2011.
“It is for these pupils, and all future generations of Abu Dhabi citizens that we strive to preserve the ecology and resources of Abu Dhabi. It is therefore fitting that Al Bateen should incorporate a solar power system that contributes both to the energy needs of the school and the wider community. We thank Enviromena for their support in making this possible,” Al Mubarak said.
