Among the six sites for which new solar power plants will be installed are the 13th century Qutub Minar, the 17th century red sandstone Red Fort and the 16th century Humayun's Tomb, according to a report in the Times of India.

"We are planning to install solar photovoltaic systems on the premises of heritage sites and historical monuments where footfalls are higher," a Delhi government official told the newspaper.

"Now, these monuments and sites will be illuminated at night by solar energy," the official added.

Previously the government deployed solar panels to light two other tourist destinations, the Jantar Mantar and Safdarjung's Tomb. The power plants at those sites, generating 9 KW and 10.4 KW, respectively, the installations can provide up to four hours of illumination per night.

Other sites being considered for solar retrofits include the city's Jama Masjid, the Old Fort and the Lotus temple.
