M+W Zander adds finishing touches to solar cell manufacturing plant for Q-Cells in Malaysia

Engineering company M+W Zander has designed and built a new solar cell manufacturing facility for Q-Cells, Malaysia, and has handed over the facility on schedule. This major project was completed within a tight construction timeframe of less than eight months to meet the “Ready for Equipment” deadline. The three-storey solar-cell factory with eight production lines has an annual output of 500 megawatts (peak).

This major order encompassed the complete value chain from site master planning, detailed design through to procurement and construction management followed by hook-up of all process equipment. In addition to the site master planning, M+W Zander was also responsible for designing and coordinating the process media systems within the newly developed science park.

A multi-national team of M+W Zander engineers from Germany and Malaysia started work in February 2008 and successfully achieved the “Ready for Equipment” deadline of 31 December 2008. “Thanks to the close collaboration of our teams within M+W Zander Group we could accelerate the project enormously to meet the challenging timeframe”, said Martin Beigl and Helmut Kurzboeck, Managing Directors of M+W Zander in Germany and Asia.

M+W Zander ranks among the global pioneers for construction of PV factories. The first PV factory designed and built by M+W Zander was handed over in 2001 and today, it ranks among the global market leaders for design and construction of factories to manufacture thin-film and silicon-based solar cells. Last year for the first time M+W Zander had an order portfolio of more than three gigawatts annual output for PV projects.

M+W Zander presented its integrated solutions for design and construction of PV factories and power plants at Intersolar 2009. The range of services covers the complete value chain in the solar industry: from extraction of silicon to photovoltaic cells and modules, as well as the construction of solar power plants. M+W Zander also gave a presentation entitled “To be prepared for the future”, providing information on options for cost reduction and recycling of waste water, gases, and chemicals.
