At a cost of $97 m, BP Solar will increase its production in the US, making its Maryland plant the biggest in the whole North America.
The plant will not only be a factory: it will have advanced storm-water management and recycling systems and a roof covered by a garden, so that the environmental footprint of the facility is reduced. And, of course, it will also be covered by solar panels.
The news has been considered so important for Maryland that even Gov. Martin O'Malley, attended the groundbreaking and praised BP for its new investment in the state.
Thanks to the new state law that was passed this year Maryland is now an excellent place for solar power, as it is required that solar power generates at least 2% of the state’s energy by 2022. Businesses now are confident because they can better plan long-term investments, especially when these require many millions of dollars.
The British firm is ongoing an impressive expansion effort, as it is also increasing its capacity in India and Spain.
