The plant will use about 70,000 Kyocera PV modules on a 36-hectare site, and it will be able to power around 5,000 homes. The project is being developed by Avanzalia Solar.
"As a leading manufacturer of PV modules, Kyocera will continue to refine its technologies and supply highly reliable solar energy products worldwide,” said Mr Tatsumi Maeda, General Manager of Kyocera Corporation’s Solar Energy Group. "We believe that clean, renewable solar electricity can help preserve our fragile environment and make a significant contribution to society’s energy needs”, he added.
Kyocera, one of the world's largest solar manufacturers, is probably one of the only firms able to provide such large amount of modules at this time, when there is a clear shortage in the market. The Japanese firm is, however, in its way to increase capacity, and it has plans to hit the 500 megawatt milestone by 2001.
