World Cup stadium at Belo Horizonte to have PV rooftop

The Mineirão soccer stadium in Belo Horizonte, a site that will play host to six 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil matches and another three games of the Confederations Cup in 2013, is being topped with a 1.6 MW solar array.

The stadium has been undergoing a major renovation since January 2010. The new solar power plant will be connected to CEMIG’s (Minas Gerais State Electricity Supply Company) electrical distribution network and is large enough to meet the electricity demand of about 1,200 medium-sized households.

At least 10 percent of the power generated at the plant will be directed to the Mineirão, officials said in a statement.

The plant is being assembled by a company called Martifer Solar. Construction works began in December 2012 and the mechanical assembly (structures and modules) was concluded in January.

The array is scheduled to go into commercial operation next month.

Commercial operation is expected to begin in March.
