The plan was first announced by DEWA MD & CEO HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer at the MENA Renewable Energy Forum in 2012. The state-owned utility has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Swedish energy technology company Cleanergy and construction firm Al-Futtaim Carillon for the installation of a Stirling Engine for the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant which, when completed, will be one of the largest solar parks in the region.
The plant will contribute significantly to Dubai’s energy needs and is part of the long-term national initiative to build a green economy in the UAE announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in January 2012.
“By 2030, Dubai’s average energy growth is projected to be in the range of 4-5% per annum” said Al Tayer, “…and our target under the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, is to reduce energy consumption by 30 percent through the implementation of enhanced energy-efficient initiatives and, by the same token, to significantly reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide.”
Concern is mounting in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region over increases in population and electricity consumption in the face of climate change and the security of energy sources. Renewable energy will play an increasingly important role in alleviating these concerns and will contribute significantly to the regions energy mix in the future.
