The town council of Carmona, which is located just 30 kilometres from Seville, has declared its support for a 53 MW solar thermal power plant, which should be operational within two years. Asoleo, which is 51% owned by the major utility company Sevilla Endesa, is the company behind the project. According to Carmona’s mayor, Antonio Cano, Asoleo "is already a leader in the sector and will give a very significant boost to the industrial development of Carmona”.
The Carmona solar thermal plant will have an installed capacity of 53 MW and will cost €211 million. From an environmental perspective, the plant will help avoid the emission of 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum, thanks to its solar collectors which will accumulate energy from more that 2,800 hours of sunlight a year.
The plant is expected to employ 200 workers during construction and on completion will create 100 jobs: 40 permanent positions, 30 posts through sub-contrators, and 35 indirect jobs.
Carmona Town Council has announced that the project will go ahead once the necessary environmental permits have been obtained from the Environment Ministry of the Andalusia Regional Government.
