Puertollano’s Urban Development Counsellor, Rafael Sánchez, said that these renewable energy investments will give another boost to the town’s economic diversification, with the support of the new Sustainable Economy Law currently being enacted by the Spanish government, and strengthens Spain’s ability to generate electricity using solar energy.
Renovalia currently operates a photovoltaic array on the ouskirts of El Villar de Puertollano, which occupies an area of 175 hectares.The site is home to 350,000 photovoltaic solar panels with a combined capacity of 70 MW, which have been generating electricity since 2008. The company has now entered the solar thermal electric market, planning to construct 50 MW of solar thermal electric capacity in five 10-MW plants.
Puertollano town council has also announced that it has granted planning permission to Iberdrola to construct an a pilot plant to test generating steam directly in the solar field of a solar thermal electric plant. This project will cost €2,134,624.
