Centrally located, the new facility will serve as About:Energy's central hub for UK and European customers, while also helping to attract top talent from the capital.
The site, covering approximately 3,000 square meters, features a state-of-the-art laboratory designed to facilitate advanced battery performance testing and research to quickly gather critical data and insights for companies across the automotive, aerospace, and aviation industries, empowering them to build battery products, whilst reducing costs and timelines. It also offers comprehensive capabilities, including battery teardown parameterisation, and cell testing up to 1,000A.
Work at the new battery testing facility will focus on the adoption of next-generation batteries such as solid-state, sodium-ion, and Lithium iron Manganese Phosphate (LFMP), as these technologies require a significant amount of data to help companies understand their role in specific applications.
About:Energy aims to eliminate the need for costly and time-consuming in-house battery testing by offering companies and their engineering teams direct access to world-leading advanced battery intelligence and digital models via its software platform, The Voltt, enabling them to build better batteries, and accelerate timelines by reducing reliance on physical testing.
Through The Voltt, the company provides a range of simulation products that includes data that provides insight into the thermal, electrical, and degradation of batteries so customers can make informed decisions when it comes to the development of battery packs, battery management systems, and warranties .
“We are delighted to open our new battery testing facility, which will allow us to scale our battery testing capabilities and drive innovation across multiple industries” said Gavin White, co-founder and CEO of About:Energy. “We want to build a new standard for the UK's battery technology landscape, and this new facility is part of a long-term, multi-million-pound investment strategy over the next five years to support R&D and the commercialization of leading battery measurement technologies . By leveraging our team's experience from building some of the UK's most advanced labs, including those at Imperial College London and the Warwick Manufacturing Group, we are committed to ensuring the levels of efficiency and quality in battery testing.”
The battery testing facility is the headquarters for About Energy's experienced team, comprising experts with backgrounds from organizations such as Rolls Royce, Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, COMSOL, Aston Martin and Warwick Manufacturing Group. The team also includes leading academics from renowned institutions such as the National Physics Laboratory, Imperial College London, University of Birmingham, and Warwick University.
As part of About:Energy's commitment to minimize its environmental impact, they've used waste glass for whiteboards, grid feedback battery cyclers and all the furniture for the new facility has been sourced second-hand to help reduce landfill waste and support a more sustainable approach to outfitting the facility.
The announcement highlights About:Energy's mission to enhance the UK battery ecosystem, and follows recent news that it has secured £1 million Government funding for battery development.
