The application was filled in by BrightSource Energy. The chosen site is near Ivanpah Dry Lake in San Bernardino County, not far from Nevada. Construction of the plant would begin in 2009, and would take 3 years to complete. The company is currently building a 7 MW plant in Israel.
This is an important steps towards meeting the goals set by California's Energy Commission in 2004, aiming for a 33% share of the state's electricity needs covered by renewables by 2020.
