eSolar and Southern California Edison seal solar deal

Both companies have reached an agreement to develop an impressive 245 MW of concentrating solar power (CSP) in America... will CSP become the next big thing? Google, one of eSolar's biggest investors, might have the answer.

The plants are expected to be completed by 2011. The chosen location is the Antelope Valley in Southern California. Thanks to this pact, eSolar will develop the facilities and the electricity produced will be sold to Southern California Edison through 20-year agreements.

"eSolar's proposed solar projects promise to be modular, scalable and easily and rapidly deployed. SCE is excited about the prospects of eSolar's unique solar technology and the potential benefits it can bring for our customers" said Mr Stuart Hemphill from Southern California Edison.

CSP is a very promising technology that has so far only seen successful plants in Nevada and Southern Spain. However, at present a lot of money is being spent on improving the technology (Google is one of eSolar's biggest investors), given the available tax breaks and subsidies in different parts of the world, and also the prospects of CSP becoming competitive with fossil fuels in the short term.
