The enhanced system enables real-time monitoring and management of exclusion zones to help eliminate safety issues and can be used, for example, for the protection of repair technicians working on turbines.
Previously used to record crew transfers and provide farm-wide, real-time vessel location movement information, Vessel Tracker was identified by the Robin Rigg windfarm team as the solution to create a live, safety control process. This App now enables the windfarm team to create, set and manage exclusion zones in the event of planned maintenance programmes.
“Exclusion zones require a significant degree of human vigilance” said Lee Beresford, Head of Engineering at Cognitive Business, speaking about the launch of the upgraded technology. “Robin Rigg’s decision to use Vessel Tracker, as part of their safety process, and the subsequent upgrade of this application, marks a real step change in the setting and management of exclusion zones and sets the benchmark to transform safety standards in the offshore wind industry.”
The new Vessel Tracker allows control room teams at Robin Rigg to create and enforce exclusion zones with unprecedented accuracy. The system continuously tracks vessel activity and activates visual and audio alerts when a ship enters an exclusion zone. These notifications are automatically communicated to the control room, and any user with access to the platform, ensuring rapid action and enhanced safety.
The application forms one of several technologies provided by Cognitive and operating on Robin Rigg.
“The upgraded version of Vessel Tracker is a significant step forward in offshore safety management” added Adam Robinson, Marine Co-ordinator at Robin Rigg. “Cognitive’s technology packages have continually enabled us to operate Robin Rigg safely, efficiently, and profitability and we see this as being an important addition to our technology suite. Not only is this an important step for our windfarm, it’s also a significant step for the industry in terms of transforming safety standards for offshore wind technicians.”
The upgrade of Vessel Tracker reflects Cognitive Business’s ongoing effort to drive innovation in offshore wind operations. Established in 2018, Cognitive Business offers a comprehensive suite of data and machine learning-based solutions to help energy industry clients improve decision support, performance monitoring and predictive maintenance of equipment.
