The Luxembourg-based company Electrawinds is working in partnership with the International Finance Corporation Infra Ventures (IFC) to develop a large wind farm in south-eastern Kenya and the two companies have signed a cooperation agreement to this effect. The planned wind farm will be located in Mpeketoni in Kenya’s Lamu District at an investment cost of approximately €180 million.
Electrawinds has been working on this project since 2011 and considers IFC as a key partner in the development, financing and eventual operation of the future wind farm. The two companies expect to receive an environmental license later this year and subsequently a building permit also. The project is expected to commence its construction phase in 2014 and will consist of between 36 and 45 turbines. The site covers 800 acres of land is situated about 20 kilometres from the port of Lamu.
IFC launched its $100 million Infra Ventures fund in 2008, the aim of the fund being to help develop renewable energy projects in emerging markets.
