The partnership will see Onyx InSight’s innovative advanced sensing technology, ecoCMS, installed on 220 turbines, more than half of which have been in operation for over 10 years, and includes a 5-year grease flushing agreement.
As part of its efforts to achieve net zero emissions from carbon dioxide by 2050, Japan has been ramping up its wind power in recent years. 2020 was the best year for increased capacity in the country’s history with 4.37 GW achieved across over 2,500 units. This increased capacity was delivered through onshore assets, but Japan has strong ambitions to develop its offshore production. By 2040, the country aims to be the world’s number 3 offshore wind producer with 45 GW of installed capacity.
Key to this growth is bringing in innovative technologies from established wind markets including Europe and United States to increase performance, reduce the cost of operating and maintaining wind assets and therefore lowering the levelised cost of energy and boosting profitability. Through this partnership, EOS are bringing high-quality predictive maintenance services to the turbines they operate and monitor. Predictive maintenance strategies enabled by Onyx Insight’s advanced sensing technology can help save operators up to 30 percent on maintenance budgets as well as extend useful asset life by up to 25 percent.
Additionally, EOS is looking to utilise the engineering expertise of more mature wind markets to maximise asset performance, reliability and efficiency. For example, a simple operations and maintenance process such as grease flushing is critical to gearbox health and can maximise oil life.
“We aim to form global partnerships that allow us to offer our customers the best and most innovative services in the Japanese wind market” said Hiroyuki Minase, EOS. “We were aware of Onyx InSight’s reputation for having high-quality technical capabilities and in-depth engineering expertise and were impressed with the performance and cost effectiveness of the ecoCMS product. Our expectations were high - and they have delivered.”
