Korean manufacturer Hyosung Power & Industrial Systems has won international certification for its 2MW offshore wind generator, the first Korean company to do so. The certification was awarded by DEWI-OCC, a wind power certifier based in Germany. The award follows the company’s international validation for its 750kW wind power generation system in April 2013.
2MW systems currently account for half of the global large wind power generator market. Hyosung’s system is expected to become a highly sought after product and a flagship item in the company’s bid to advance into the global market.
“The core of competitiveness in the wind power industry is domestic development of technology, and we are very proud of the fact that we became the first in Korea to win international certification for our 2MW-class product” said Christopher H. Cho, Esq, Hyosung Power & Industrial Systems President. “We will continue to increase Korea's national competitiveness by spearheading domestic development of wind power technology as a leader in the wind power industry. Hyosung will speed up the development of a 3MW-class system, and a large scale 5MW-class system for marine wind power generation, and will thus emerge as a world-class wind power equipment maker by banking on diverse models and technologies catering to customers' needs.”
The award is significant in that it will advance Korea’s domestic development of wind power generation equipment and facilities, which the country has had to import from abroad so far. It will also enable Hyosung to enter the global market which is expected to be worth 50 trillion won a year to the country in the future. Hyosung developed its generator using home-grown technology thereby eliminating the need to pay royalties to foreign companies.
DEWI-OCC, the German company that awarded the certification to Hyosung, is an international certifier which validates the safety and reliability of wind power generation systems by comprehensively assessing design, production and demonstrating processes of the product. The Hyosung generator was subjected to strict tests on its stability and reliability at demonstration sites for more than a year following regulations set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
