Samsung has already won a bid to supply the American developer, Cielo Windpower, will three of its new 2.5 MW wind turbines, while Hyundai is currently in the process of launching three models with capacities of 1.65 MW, 2 MW and 2.5 MW during 2009. Samsung, which plans to build a plant in Korea in 2010, is working in conjunction with two British companies to develop their machine. On the one hand, wind power consultancy and engineering firm, Garrad Hassan, is working on turbine design, while on the other, the Romax Group is concentrating on gear boxes and drive trains.
Hyundai, which is in the process of building a plant in Gunsan, intends to enter the US market with its conventional 1.65 MW models before year end, and plans to launch its 2 MW direct-coupled, permanent magnet wind turbine in 2010. Both machines have been designed under license agreements with American Superconductor’s wholly owned AMSC Windtec™ subsidiary.
