Spain’s first offshore wind turbine installed by Gamesa

Gamesa has installed Spain’s first offshore wind turbine at the Arinaga Quay in Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. The 5MW turbine is also the company’s first offshore prototype and has a rotor diameter of 128 meters with a total height of 154 meters. The turbine should be able to generate enough energy to supply 7,500 households per year.

The commissioning of the turbine is a key step towards its certification which is expected to occur in the next few months. Installation began in mid-April with the erection of the tower, at a height of 90 meters, manufactured by Windar, a joint venture between Gamesa and Daniel Alonso. The nacelle is manufactured at the Tauste factory in Zaragoza and is 12.5 metres long and 4 metres tall weighing 72 tonnes.

Assembly of the three blades, each of them 62.5 meters long and 15 tons in weight, ended in May and subsequently the company has been employed in developing the electrical installation work and connection to the network. The turbine is equipped with technology that the company had already developed in its 4.5MW system and has a modular and redundant design which ensures reliability while maximising energy output. Gamesa obtained design certification for its offshore turbine from DMV in late 2012.
