Iroquois-based Orenda Energy Solutions, a company that manufactures wind turbines for the global medium distributed wind market, has announced it has licensed its proprietary ‘tilting tower’ technology to Eocycle Technologies Inc, based in Montreal.
Eocyle manufactures an innovative 25 kW direct-drive wind turbine for customers involved in areas such as agricultural and business and those requiring rural electrification in remote regions across the globe. It is the first time Orenda has entered into a technology licensing agreement with another turbine manufacture since the company was established in 2012.
The technology being licensed to Eocyle was initially designed for Orenda’s Skye 51 kW medium wind turbine which utilises a patented, multi-pivot point technology that allows for large nacelles to be raised and lowered to heights of up to 36 metres. This reduces installation and servicing costs as it enables servicing to be carried out at ground level, thereby eliminating the need for expensive crane hire. Even though Eocycle 25 kW turbines are low maintenance, this means that future Eocycle customers can protect their asset by lowering and securing it whenever maintenance is required, or in advance of an approaching storm.
“We are delighted with this validation of our technology and business approach that entering into this agreement gives us” said Orenda CEO Gerry Lalonde. “Orenda’s success in closing this deal, which we envisage being the first of many, was based on Eocycle’s requirement to look beyond its current turbine design and integrate our patented technology which is completely unique in the renewables industry across any size or scale of wind turbine.”
Eocyle Chief Executive Richard Legault added that the integration of Orenda’s technology into Eocycle’s 25 kW wind turbine offers the significant installation and cost reductions the distributed wind industry is looking for. Small and medium wind turbines are a lifeline for rural economies such as geographically dispersed farming communities and the licensing deal will enable Eocycle to provide its customer base with a very versatile small wind turbine solution.
