REpower and Banks Renewables sign contracts for two wind farms

While the size of the two new wind farms may not be significant, totalling just 14 MW, the news is of some importance considering the difficulties encountered in developing new onshore wind farms in the UK, where strict planning regulations are hindering growth of the onshore segment.

REpower UK will be supplying seven wind turbines to two wind farms in Yorkshire owned by Banks Renewables. Hazlehead wind farm, 11 miles from Barnsley, will consist of three REpower MM82 turbines, whilst the slightly larger Marr development, near Doncaster, will consist of four MM92 turbines.

“These are the second and third UK wind farms where REpower has been chosen to supply the wind turbines for Banks. We hope that the construction of Hazlehead and Marr wind farms will go smoothly,” said Neil Brown, Group Commercial Director of Banks Group, one of the UK’s largest land developers.

The total capacity for both wind farms will be over 14 MW, providing enough electricity annually to power over 9,000 homes in total. The turbines at these sites each have a rated capacity of 2.05 megawatts. Construction is due to start in April and the sites are scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

“Both these sites are in Yorkshire but the wind conditions are quite different, which is why we are supplying two different products from the same range. The REpower MM82 is ideal for windy locations such as the site at Hazlehead. The REpower MM92, with its larger rotor diameter, produces a higher yield on lower wind speed sites and so is better suited to the wind conditions at Marr wind farm,” commented Rick Eggleston, Managing Director of REpower UK.

REpower UK is one of the UK’s fastest growing wind turbine manufacturers, with a 30% share of the total wind power market in 2010 from a standing start in 2005. The company now sits at second in terms of market share in the wind turbine manufacturing market in the UK.
