The reopening ceremony was held on 4th April, marking the completion of a collaborative effort to repower the site, increasing the energy generation capacity of the wind farm by approximately 14 percent with 122 fewer turbines on-site than previously.
InfraRed Capital Investments acquired 60 percent of the shares in the Brazos Wind Farm in February 2024, but Shell USA continues to operate the facility. The wind farm covers an area of approximately 10,000 acres between Borden and Scurry counties in Fluvanna, Texas.
The wind farm utilises 38 next-generation Nordex 5 MW turbines, increasing the energy generation capacity to 182 MW.
Shell has facilitated the removal and repurposing of 2,100 tons of fibrelgass from 160 decommissioned turbine blades. This material will be repurposed to support the creation of products for concrete, asphalt, composites, and/or bulk molding applications.
The repowering included enhanced remote monitoring and data generation, thereby increasing overall reliability and safety.
