The purchaser is the US utility, MidAmerican Energy, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa. Siemens will deliver a total of 258 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.3 megawatts (MW) for several wind farms across the state. Siemens reveals that after commissioning in January 2012, the combined capacity of 593 MW “will be sufficient to supply 190,000 US households with clean electricity”.
"Our largest onshore order to date from the US demonstrates that we are well on track to becoming one of the three leading suppliers of wind turbines by 2012,” said René Umlauft, CEO of the Siemens Renewable Energy Division.
This latest contract highlights Siemens’ growing commitment not only to offshore wind, where it is already a world leader, but also on land, where it has started to pose a threat to market leader Vestas’ long-standing domination. The contract with MidAmerican Energy comes immediately off the back of penning a framework agreement with Enel Green Power to deliver up to 260 wind turbines for a number of wind farms in Europe.
Siemens reports that during 2010, the products and solutions making up its Environmental Portfolio enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 270 million tonnes, an amount equal to the total annual carbon dioxide emissions of Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore combined.
