The company quoted the second lowest price for its wind farm Minas I in the second tender for wind energy held in the South American nation.
SoWiTec has been active in Uruguay since 2007, and has built up a pipeline of 1,200 MW in wind power projects.
By having successfully participated in the tender, SoWiTec has gained the possibility to sign a power purchase contract with Uruguay’s governmental energy utility UTE for the next 20 years.
A total of 23 projects from 17 different developers have been offered in the tender with a total capacity of more than 1 GW, while electricity purchasing agreements will be assigned to only 150 MW.
SoWiTec offered a price of $63.90 per megawatt hour fed into the electricity grid and expects to sign the power purchase agreement with UTE later this year.
These low prices for wind power in Uruguay confirm the outcome of the Brazilian tender: With an average price of $63.50 per MWh for the winning projects, wind power is by now a fully competitive and clean alternative to other energy sources such as biomass and thermal power plants.
SoWiTec’s project Minas I is located in the Uruguayan region of Lavalleja and will have an installed capacity of 42 MW. Due to excellent wind conditions in the area, the turbines will supply clean electricity to more than 50,000 households.
